The Diocesan Archives recently received a donation of a brand new Zoom H5 recorder which enables us to begin our Oral History programme.
Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines ‘oral history’ as the collection and study of historical information using sound recordings of interviews with people having personal knowledge of past events.
Oral histories are one tool the Archives can use to capture and preserve information, gain first-hand insight into historical events, and record the experiences and testimonies of members of the Diocese that would otherwise be lost.
We are excited to begin our programme and look forward to sharing the fruits of the collection. If you have any suggestions for potential interviewees please let me know.
Thanks to a generous donation from RICOH, the Archives have been able to purchase Collection Management Software, called PastPerfect. As the official repository for the documents and materials, made or received by the Diocese of Christchurch, the Archives has a responsibility to maintain physical and intellectual control over the holdings.
Physically we are fortunate to have a storage area that complies with best practice standards for archival storage. Intellectually, however, we have less control over our holdings with only 20% of our current archival holdings listed. A Collection Management System is critical to ensure all archives, objects, photographs, media and oral history recordings are accessioned, linked, arranged and described and ultimately accessible to researchers.
Past Perfect is a simple software package which is used by many small museums and institutions across New Zealand to manage collections which encompass a range of archives.
We are very excited to begin formal cataloging work on our holdings. And we are incredibly grateful to RICOH for their support.
